ON THE SURFACE: the new project of Mykyta Kadan
21.10 - 7.11.2010
The new project of Mykyta Kadan in the Collection Gallery
The 21th of October, 2010, Thursday - a young Ukrainian artist, one of the founders of "R.E.P." group and the finalist of PinchukArtPrize Mykyta Kadan presents his newest project and dedicates it to the advertising surfaces of the city… and to those things they are covering.
The first part of the project includes the paintings: from the monumental 2?3 m to the miniature 10?5 cm, that show the view of city with empty billboards. White rectangle that covers a big part of the picture on the one hand gives a painting an abstract perception and on the other hand deprives the viewer of the object of viewing. The object that is worth to be seen stays below, creating "a closed picture".
The second part of the project includes 10 collages. At first a spectator sees a gathering of colored geometric figures on the white surface that in a great way remind of suprematic compositions of the beginning of the 20th century. And only while approaching the work closely, - the viewer notices thin pale-grey contours of the real city landscape on the white surface. The vivid colored figures on the picture are nothing less but the advertising surfaces: boards, light-boxes, banners…
Mykyta Kadan, the author of the project: "I completely forgot about the circumstances of time and place, only one picture is holding in my memory: empty billboards stay along the highway to the horizon. White rectangles are like fragments cut from the landscape. Removed parts of the things that are seen.
After that I noticed them everywhere. The most often - on the city streets. And the city started looking like a collage, vivid and aggressive, parts of which are trying to shout one another down. The fight field we have to run across. White cut out pieces - to take a breath.
Sometimes there are a lot of them, a great number of them. White is looking on the city through a great number of windows. Your advertisement could have been here. Something else could have been here. There is nothing here. "
1919 Kazimir Malevich published the well-known text, that was finished with the words "I won the lining of the colored sky, tore it down, and in the bag, that appeared I put the colors and made a knot. Swim! White free abyss, infinity is before us!" After that white-endless-full of freedom more than once appeared in art - in the works of Roman Opalko, Wolodymyr Weisberg, Agnes Martin etc.
"On the Surface" - is the second personal exhibition of the author in the Collection Gallery. The last year the project "The Place of the Action" after the exhibition in the gallery was shown in PinchukArtCentre, in the exhibition "ßêùî/If/Åñëè" in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Perm and also in culture centre Spinnerei in Leipzig. Recently the author took part in the main project of the Ural biennale. As a member of the R.E.P. group during this year he opened the exhibitions in the National Museum of Art in Kyiv, and also in Munich, Stockholm, Budapest, New York…
The opening of the exhibition will take part on the 21st of October, at 19.00 in the Collection Gallery with the participation of the author.
The Exhibition will last until the 7th of November. Address: Kyiv, vyl. Pankivska, 8.
